Winter 2007 Issue 7
Our New Editors -
Louise Sheard and Georgie Ingram
Welcome to the seventh issue of the Culcheth Hall Senior School Newsletter

A note from Miss Stockwell

The first term in a new school year is always very busy. This term we have welcomed two new members of staff to the senior school: Mrs Ku (Maths) and Mrs Cooper (English). They will have, by now, got to know all the girls and found their way around school! Mrs Higton has left on maternity leave and her place has been taken by Mrs Humblet.

Miss Stockwell (Headteacher)I hope the girls new to the school, in year 7 and other forms, have settled in and now feel part of Culcheth. At Speech Night we celebrated the success of the last academic year. 100% of the girls gained 5A* to C grades at GCSE with Sie Hui Voon (Head Girl) achieving 8A* and 5A grades.

This term we have been rehearsing for the school production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”. It has involved many of the girls and staff, some performing and some organising the event and all working hard to make it a success.

School finishes for the Christmas holidays with a “civvies day” on 19th December and starts for the Senior School girls on Wednesday 9th January 2008.

Do have a good Christmas and look forward to a new year of many varied and different experiences.

My first day at Culcheth Hall School

On my first day at school, people always said “hi” or something nice! I saw my buddy she showed me around and showed me where everything was. The teachers are kind to you and everyone is very welcoming.

By Emma Cathie (Year 7)

Amy Parker

As most of us are aware Amy Parker from last years Year 7 died in the summer holidays after fighting a brain tumour. Amy's determination and bravery has inspired all who knew her.

In her memory we have has a variety of events such as the Coffee Morning and Cake Sale which was a huge success and raised £1125. We are still raising money in order to buy a bench and tree in memory of Amy, and if it all goes well this will be set up by February.

Amy's mum has taken up the challenge of running the London Marathon 2008 in memory of her brave daughter. I am sure all of you will wish her well in this physically demanding event. If any of you wish to sponsor her and her chosen charity, CLIC Sergeant visit www.justgiving.com/katyparker. It doesn't matter how small the amount every little will help, and this could be your way of remembering Amy.

Thank you to every one who has contributed to the fund raising so far.

Christmas Disco

The Christmas Disco was very successful.
Everyone enjoyed themselves, even the Senior girls!

Latin Club

Latin club was a new venture for this school year. It has run throughout this term where the members from Years 6 to 9 have not only learnt some latin but also about roman way of life. They spent one meeting making Roman sweets and biscuits, that actually did not taste too bad…. We did not fancy the snails fattened in milk or the dormice!!

All the girls successfully completed Stage 2 of the Cambridge Latin Course and were awarded certificates in assembly.

The Great Arch in Chinatown, ManchesterHome Economics GCSE

On Wednesday November 7th 2007, Mrs. Wilkinson and the Year 11 Home Economics group went to China Town in Manchester for the afternoon, as a part of their GCSE coursework.
They visited three Chinese supermarkets where they had the chance to buy a range of truly oriental ingredients. Katie Skinkis bought some steamed dumplings while Mrs. Wilkinson bought some edible fungus, coconut milk, seaweed, lotus root and oyster mushrooms. No-one fancied the hens’ feet or frog’s legs, though!

Applied Business A Level Course

Year 12 have visited Sainsbury’s and Unicorn, the organic cooperative grocers to do market research.

The Senior Manager from the successful locally based Cotton Traders came to talk to Year 11 and 12 about marketing, manufacturing and promotion of their products.

Netball Report Autumn Term 2007

We are running four school teams this year: Year 7, Year 8, Under 15 and Under 16.

Year 7 and 8 have played several league matches but have had 2 fixtures postponed due to the weather. These matches will have to be played next term.

Year 7 are doing very well having won four out of their five matches.

Year 8 have been unlucky having lost two of their games by one goal and one game by two goals. They have won one game 12-0.

The Under 15 and Under 16 teams have had several matches cancelled as some schools have been unable to fulfil the fixtures. Hopefully this won’t happen next term. Please refer to the spreadsheets for all the results.

There has been a change to the Year 7 Trafford Tournament date; this will now take place on Saturday 15th March. Please ensure you are available to play in this tournament.
